Birds in the olive groves

Please contact us if you can identify the birds we heard in Puglia from the following clips,  (Ian apologises for his commentary). In the first clip, there is a whooping bird call which can be just heard below a dog barking. In the second, there is general bird song:

Puglia, famous for it’s Trulli houses, is also home to the largest number of centuries old olive trees in the world, and just the subject material for Julia. The trees at the Masseria Brancati go back to the Roman period and beyond. Left, she is being filmed for RAI, Italian state TV.

Julia drawing wisteria at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.

It was not too warm a day, which drew comment from members of the college. This drawing marks the start of a project to draw unusual plant growths and trees around Cambridge. Julia would like to thank the college for allowing her access to draw this wisteria.

The Artists amongst the Giants of London

On a bright but windy day, the artist was caught on camera drawing an ancient Indian bean tree in London. Later that day, Julia was drawing an ancient chestnut tree in Kensington Gardens. Julia is also working on a painting of a plane tree in Green Park. There will be more to come as the year progresses.

A New Woodscape on East Wretham Heath

Julia drawing  tumbled down pine trees at East Wretham

(Norfolk Wildlife Trust Reserve)

During a recent walk on East Wretham Nature Reserve, Julia was attracted to these remains of pine trees, reminiscent of the original pine stump she used for her first Woodscape, Woodscape I as well as woodscape V. Set in the windswept landscape of the Brecks of Norfolk, the scene is a bit like something from a painting by Paul Nash.

The development of this new painting can be seen on the work in the new progress page, and links to youtube clips of Julia painting at East Wretham are within the images below:
